Do not be afraid you are paying for novelty and branding alone. This sandwich maker is well made and solid, performs very well, and has good instructions, plus it is NOT flimsy plastic.
That white surface is hard, smooth enamel, and the whole thing weighs about four lbs without the box, so it's heavy and stable and not prone to scratching. It features two clips to hold it shut while the sandwiches are cooking and sealing (these are plastic however, and while they seem sturdy enough, I will update my review if they ever do break).
The instructions are complete and clear and written in both spanish and english (very good english).
This machine will make one sandwich (two triangles) at a time, but since cooking time is around three minutes, this has not been a problem for us. The first sandwich is still hot by the time the fourth comes out (you can stretch beyond four with a warmed plate and foil).
THE FACES WORK. They come out so cute, sandwich after sandwich. Be aware that buttering the outside of your bread will be very tasty but will cause different browning results for the faces.
Super fast, minimal cleanup meal. Seriously, grilled cheese is now an impulse food for me instead of a big production over the stove. The outside is crisp and the edges are almost like pretzels in light, crunchy texture. I've made tuna melts and scrambled egg sandwiches as well, with really excellent results.
My cleaning suggestion is to use a new, soft toothbrush to whisk any crumbs or browned cheese out of the nonstick plates when it's cool. I only go over it with a damp cloth if filling spills. The only difficult spot to reach is in the back by the hinge, but if you do spill some filling there, just wipe it out with a qtip; the space is not very big.
CONCLUSION
I received this as a gift because I'm a sucker for things that are cute and playful. I was surprised to find that it is also a solid, reliable appliance. And I was even more delighted than I expected with those little happy bear and kitty faces on my sandwiches. (I tell you, they are the cure for the common work week.)

Fills my Sandwich needs
I totally love my Hello Kitty sandwich maker, so I wrote a haiku praising it! I mean, there are so many wonderful things you can do with it! For example, place Hello Kitty images on your toast...and then eat Hello Kitty and be completed. I am amazed that I had never seen such a break through and important sandwich making tool on television! Thank Goodness for sites like these where you can find such beautiful tools...I am so glad I spent my money on this instead of paying for food this week...!
You'll love this handy panini press. First of all, my little girl will eat anything that has Hello Kitty on it, so that is a miracle in itself. Second, it heats up fast and cleans easily. Third, the sandwiches look and taste great. Don't be fooled into getting the one without the burn-in logo, we almost bought one of those at a rival store.
