This seems to be a pretty popular item since it's always out of stock. I finally received mine and have made sandwiches and waffles. The plates are easy to remove and clean. The pocket sandwiches turned out great. A regular slice of bread overlaps the edge of the plates and the crust gets really crispy, which to me is the best part. The sandwiches need to sit a couple of minutes to crisp up once they are taken out of the machine. I think the Avante did a decent job on the waffles but keep in mind this isn't intended to serve up a quick breakfast for a large family. The recipes included with the machine makes 12 waffles which will take over 20 minutes to cook. I make 6 to eat right away and finish and put the rest in the freezer for another day.

I have also used the waffle plates to make the garlic shimp kebobs recipe that's in the instruction manual. They were really good.

Also, the plates may smoke a bit when they are used for the first time, mine did, but the taste of the food wasn't affected.

I love this new George Forman grill. I had one of the big old round ones with no bells or whistles and while it worked great it was not a lot of fun to clean so I used it less that I would have liked.
Clean up on this grill is a real pleasure, the plates easily snap out and clean easily in the sink or in the dishwasher if I'm feeling really lazy.
The food cooks just as quickly as on my old grill. The grill lines aren't as pronounced, but that is probably because I've been using the unit on medium heat unlike my old grill which was alway on full blast (no other choice). I'm not sure that I can fit quite as much food on this rectangular one as my old round one, but it's not bad.
I haven't tried out the waffle or baking sheet yet, but I don't see why they wouldn't work as advertised.
Just to help clarify, you get 5 plates, but really only 3 different setups. The regular grill plate goes on the bottom and the "steak plate" goes on top for most applications. For waffles there are 2 waffle plates, top and bottom, for this setup. Then the flat baking or cooking surface with a top plate.

I loved the total control over the toasting process. I could turn the bread over at any time while toasting and decide what shade of toast (readiness) I preferred. I could also add some sandwich fixings when I chose to make a hot sandwich. Although, the operating instructions warn against toasting items that may be particularly prone to melting such as pastries, I made a sandwich with plain lettuce and cucumbers which turned out perfect.

The dial could use a dot to indicate where the control was pointing to. For example, if you set the the dial to toast to number 7, there is no dot or color on the dial that quickly reaffirms your selection at a glance. Instead, the dial is all one flat black color. There is an indentation on the 'selection' side of the dial but you'd only know it by running your fingers above it.

The grill is sturdy and well made. Another advantage is that you can clean the entire toaster having access to the inner workings. And it is stainless steel so I expected to be able to clean and maintain it for at least a few years.

To my surprise, even with only three heating elements running the length of the toaster, it toasted bread very well. It is more suited for two slices of toast not four as stated in the manufactures description.

The machine is not too cumbersome and weighs minimally. It takes about as much room as a coffee maker. You should exercise some caution because it is an 'open-faced' toaster and the heat is unopposed thereby anything other than toast (or the like) coming in contact with the top-side grill can burn (I think of household animals or children's small but inquiringly little fingers).

Members of my family did not like that it had no timer bell for when the toast was done. Since I like to gage the readiness of the bread it posed no inconvenience. Everyone else in my household was relieved when the toaster failed to turn on the next morning! I was rather sad to see it returned to the box. I was out-voted when the machine failed simply because if quality was an issue, it was more than likely the replacement toaster would fail again prematurely. There's no arguing that.

I loved the toaster and gave it five stars for its toasting ability--the one day I was able to enjoy it. A wonderful product and would buy again if I was reassured it would work somewhat long into the future.

I have tried every diet there is from Nutrisystem, Weight Watchers, you name it --a library full of diet books. A friend told me about how she lost 20 lbs. this winter while completely laid up recovering from hip surgery. She couldn't excercise, but followed the plan and the pounds came off. I have been on the plan for about a month and have lost a solid 10 lbs. Pants are loser and people are commenting on weight loss. The plan is easy - you just have to educate yourself on how many carb grams (maximum of 6, 17-20 gram servings per day) and how many sugar grams (maximum of 15 grams per day)are in the foods you eat. So you can eat plenty of protein, and low carb veggies. Eggs are back in my diet and I have found I can eat bread again, but 1/2 an English muffin vs. the whole thing. The biggest change was in my fruit consumption. One piece of fruit or one glass of juice can wipe out the daily limit of 15 grams in one serving but I haven't missed it that much when I can now have a turkey sandwich with cheese, cucs, and tomato etc. There are now thin, whole grain, sandwich buns on the market that make it easy to have bread again without blowing your carb limit. And I can also have 2 squares of 85% chocolate and a glass of red wine if I choose--makes my day ! The best part about the plan is that my sugar cravings have gone away, and I find that I no longer roam the kitchen at night needing more food. I am completely satiated on this plan. So like others have said, it is not a diet, it is a lifestyle change. I am not fanatical about it. I still have a luscious dessert once a week and go out to dinner frequently, but can always find a better choice on the menu. So I highly recommend.

I just finished baking a loaf of Hawaiian Sweet bread. It was delious. I used the sweet cycle because they said bread with a lot of sugar will brown faster. The sweet cycle cuts down by 10 minutes the cooking time. I also used a light crust. It came out perfect.

Reading some of the other reviews here, I looked over the recipes included and I would suggest you get a bread cookbook or get recipes from the internet. I use the internet. The boxed breads are nice, too, because you don't have to do any measuring except for the water.

This is my second machine. I had a Breadman, and it was nothing but problems (the pan popped up during kneeding, it was noisy, it vibrated itself right off the kitchen counter to the floor, etc.) I am very happy with this machine and the quality of the bread. The machine is quiet, and does not vibrate all over the kitchen counter.

I pondered buying a Foreman grill until my eye caught sight of this baby. I compared the two grills and by far the Villaware is a better quality grill. I have other Villaware gadgets and this unit is built the with the same high quality standards. I looked no further and bought it on the spot. What an amazing little grill! Yes, it makes great (make that fantastic) panini, but it does so much more. I grilled marinated chicken breast and it cooked them so fast (to my amazement) that I overcooked them. Now that I am aware of the cooking speed, chicken breast comes out juicy. It seers in the juices, so unless you don't pay attention (as I did), it is hard to screw up. Don't underestimate the power of this grill!

Cleaning is a snap - yes, it has that handy dandy comb which does a great job cleaning. What I find very helpful is to pour some hot tap water over the grill once you're done cooking and have unplugged the unit. It loosens the residue and makes the final cleaning extremely easy. This grill shares top billing with my Kitchen Aid and Magic Mill.

The unit is sharp looking and slick. It has a lock on the cover which allows the unit to be stored on end. It takes up very little counter space (yes, I like to look at it all the time..). The fact that it doesn't have a power switch is not an issue for me. In fact I consider it a safety feature (hence the 5 stars). It is also quite heavy and sturdy.

My favorite panini (so far that is....) is from Lidia's Italian-American show. Take a can of tuna packed in olive oil, a can of chick peas drained and lightly smashed, � chopped onion, salt, pepper and some additional olive oil. Mix it all together, spread between thick slices of Italian bread and grill in the mighty Villaware. Delizioso...... Buon appetito!

First of all, this is a beautiful cookbook! The quality of the paper and photographs is worth the price alone! The recipes are all winners. I have already found most of these recipes on the internet, and all of the ones I have tried are excellent. It is wonderful that so many of the competitors were wise enough to know that sharing their signature recipes takes away nothing from their business, but adds immensely to their popularity and respect from the public. Bobby Flay and his assistants have done a wonderful job writing the intros., and the recipes are laid out very well. It is a very impressive book, and I am very happy to have all the recipes handy. If you like Throwdown, buy the book; you won't be disappointed!! Heck, if you have never seen Throwdown, still buy the book; you won't be disappointed!!

Grim ending, but nothing's left open

Yes, the ending is rather grim. However, all I could do was smile and think about how wrong it felt... but in a good way. There was a huge sense of irony that I felt a little silly at not seeing a mile away. Also, every loose end I can think of has been tied off.

This story isn't my favorite of the trilogy, but it is the one with, in my opinion, the best ending. I read a lot of books, and no ending has ever stayed in my head so well. Plus, if you're a Ford fan like I am, there's a lot of him in this book. I'm eager to hear the radio dramatization of it.

While this last book in the Hitchhiker's series doesn't exactly end on a high note, I loved it. It seemed as though Douglas Adams was getting a little tired of the series and finished it, but even he said he wasn't satisfied with the ending and would rewrite it... and there was the possibility of a sixth book in the trilogy. I would have loved that, but I'm just as happy with this ending. No book I've ever read, as I've said, has an ending that I can remember so well.

My mom had bought a commercial blender whilst traveling in Asia and needed a transformer to be able to operate it over here in the States. The blender was rated for 1390 watts and even though the machine is rated at 1000 watts, we figured it would be fine since blenders are only used for short amounts of time. The product is nice and hefty and was in good condition when it arrived. It was also very easy to set up. You just pull a pin out from the 240v slot and place it into the 110v slot, plug it in, plug your appliance into the output slot, and turn it on. The machine operated cool and quiet and the blender worked exactly like it should. Certainly not a common purchase, but if you're looking for a decent transformer, this one certainly fits the bill.

The only minor con I can think of is the size of this thing, but there really isn't any getting around it. It comes with the territory for this type of device, especially at a 1000 watt rating. In fact, I'm sure some people would think that it's size would be a positive because you simply wouldn't trust anything that was smaller.

I read the reviews and I'm really surprised cause I love this little machine. I have had mine for over a year and we use it every day. I'm actually about to buy a second one so I have it in my motorhome. I had the old silver one and I'll be honest I didn't care for it because everything came out in the same shape and I felt it was limiting....but the new red one with it's different pans is great! I agree that the timer is not the best...my numbers wiped off after about a week but I know where the time was so it has not been a problem. Yes it makes a popping noice when it's heating/cooking but that's how I know it's working :) I think that one of the reasons I love it so much is I only cook in the removable pans so I just remove and flip it out.... nothing ever sticks in it. I usualy use the large round removable pan any thing from cake, cookies, fried burritos, eggs, you name it and you can probably cook it in here. There is a cook book sold on here for this little machine and the recipes are easy and great. I bought one for my mother-in-law for her birthday cause she lives alone and doesn't like to cook big meals...she loves hers too. I'm sorry that people have had trouble but I wanted to be sure and leave a rave review so people can see it's wonderful!

I read the reviews and I'm really surprised cause I love this little machine. I have had mine for over a year and we use it every day. I'm actually about to buy a second one so I have it in my motorhome. I had the old silver one and I'll be honest I didn't care for it because everything came out in the same shape and I felt it was limiting....but the new red one with it's different pans is great! I agree that the timer is not the best...my numbers wiped off after about a week but I know where the time was so it has not been a problem. I received the Big Shot Express for Christmas this year, so haven't had it long. I was a bit nervous about putting it on my "wish list" as another family member had purchased one of the other models of this machine, it was broken before it was out of the package and the maker did not repair or replace it. Still, the promise that this machine would utilize ALL of my other dies, thus allowing me to donate my other four machines, was more than I could resist!

So far I'm THRILLED!! The machine cuts and embosses every die and embossing folder I have in my stash (Sizzix Sizzlets, Original, Bigz, Quick Kutz, Cuttlebug, Spellbinder) AND cuts all of the materials as promised, even framing mat board! I've used the chipboard die cuts to create rubbing plates as well as ephemera for my art projects. I've been able to cut several sheets of paper and card stock at one time with no problem. I've cut fabric shapes for applique as well as felt flowers for garlands.

The one time I jammed the machine I was able to successfully reverse the sandwich and remove it from the machine.

I have read most of the reviews, and it appears that negative reviewers are not using a proper knife which must be 10+" long. For example, I use this one and let it gravity cut (with no downward pressure needed) it.

Forschner / Victorinox 10-1/4" Curved with Wavy Edge Fibrox Bread/Carving Knife - NSF Model 40547

It also has soft pine wood specifically so you don't dull your blade edge. If you wanted, you could use a simple saw to cut 1/8" deep slots into wood so knife would finish cutting bread without pressing on wood. Only takes a few minutes with a simple hand saw.

I use the Norpro non-stick pans which end up with a loaf that is 4" high and 5 3/4" wide, so the guide width of 6 3/8" x 5" high are the perfect sizes. To get perfect, consistent slices is a dream come true.

So, if you use a proper 10" bread knife, this is a great slicer for home bread makers.

Great grill, great price, and great results

We never have plain "sandwiches" any more, we have "Paninis!" Slice some sourdough bread or ciabatta or whatever you have, add lunch meat, cheese, spinach leaves, a few slices of red onion and/or roasted red peppers, a few basil leaves if you have them ... whatever ... add the top piece of bread, brush it with olive oil, and close the lid. The lid flexes to accept a relatively fat sandwich, but up to 1-1/2" thick works great. Grill till it is oozy and golden brown and voila! a gourmet sandwich in your own kitchen!

Also we make toasted bread to go with dinner ... any leftover bread will do ... just brush with olive oil or spread some butter and toast it crispy ... good with soup or any dinner. This is the greatest invention since sliced bread! :)

After trying ours, we bought two more for Christmas gifts this year.

"The Big Sleep" is one of the most unique adaptations of a detective novel ever brought to the screen. Watching this film is one of the true joys of being a film buff. This is extraordinary entertainment that grabs your attention quickly and holds it until the final shot. It is exciting and engaging, and a favorite of all detective film fans.

Director Howard Hawks turned Raymond Chandler's most popular story into an absolutely mesmerizing celluloid masterpiece. Chandler's complex novel was adapted for the screen by William Faulkner, and while we may never know for sure who committed one of the murders in this blurry crime noir, like all Hawks' films, it is so incredibly entertaining we really don't care. It is full of sharp dialog and dreamy images comparable to being slipped a "mickey." One critic actually compared it to a hangover.

The story itself moves at a terrific clip, and there is so much going on you might get lost if you blink. Humphry Bogart is Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe, and from the moment he arrives to talk to General Sternwood and gets mixed up with his daughters this is a film classic.

One would think with a young and sultry Bacall getting tangled up with Bogart for the first time, they would be everything in this film; they are not, however. Bacall portrays the General's sultry older daughter, Vivian, but it is the sexy and thumb-sucking Carmen whom Marlowe meets first.

Martha Vickers gives a performance that has you thinking about her throughout, even when she isn't present. She steals every scene she is in and is one of the most memorable dolls in noir history. This was Vickers' finest moment on film and forever earned her a place in movie history.

The story takes off quickly as the very sick Sternwood wants Marlowe to look into a little matter involving blackmail and his daughters. But as Marlowe follows the trail of gambling debts, he finds one body after another and spends all his energy trying to extricate Carmen and Vivian from the mess.

Marlowe and Vivian have a spark that gives him incentive to get the job done, but he may not be able to head off the rollercoaster headed for the little kitten, Carmen, who may turn out to have some very large claws. Dorothy Malone has a brief but sexy role as a clerk who shares more than a drink with Marlowe.

Hawks filmed this as a moody dream of dialog and images hard to forget. Bogart's Marlowe has his hands full trying to keep Carmen out of trouble. And the sparks that begin to fly between he and Carmen's big sister, Vivian, may not be enough to overcome her involvement with some of the players for the other team.

Trying to find a way to keep the fast-rising body count from getting any higher, while at the same time keeping Vivian and her little sister Carmen in the clear, will take some dangerous turns for Marlowe.

Bacall has never been more beautiful or inviting than when she is slumped down in the seat of Bogart's car, just waiting for him to kiss her. You have to see this film to really appreciate it. No description could ever do it justice. You'll never see anything else like it in American cinema. A true noir classic, and one of Howard Hawks' many masterpieces.

Oh, the smell of this bread. Yes, it tastes just as good. This is called a cheeese and herb bread, but you will mostly notice the herbs. That's fine with me because this is a delicious blend.

I am not a sandwich person, prefer hot food, but I made a sandwich with this bread using ham, salami, mayo, and some shredded Italian cheese. Oh my gosh, it was so good I had it for dinner three days in a row.

I've used the mix several times in my bread machine (a mini loaf in the Just for Dinner bread machine that Amazon used to sell, gosh those were great machines), cutting the recipe in half and being rather careless about the measuring. Came out great each time no matter how nonchalant I was about the amount of yeast, et al.

I've also made the full recipe once with my new KitchenAid stand mixer (a Friday Sale special on Amazon -- thank you, Amazon, thank you!) and it came out even better. I might add that there were no instructions included for mixers, just bread machine and hand. I just did it by guesswork, and it came out wonderful.

So no matter how I mess up this recipe, I've been successful and gotten great bread. It is a very forgiving mix.

This book thankfully relates some really delectable sausage making recipes that other books frankly are quite flat, dull, and flavorless (many even recommend additives which I most certainly do not want). These sausage making recipes are spicy, jazzed up, full-flavor versions. My personal favorites are the Andouille and Tuscan Italian sausage (the wine and sun-dried tomatoes give this sausage a truly lovely flavor!). The sausage making recipes can easily be modified to create more healthier versions by substituting pork loin instead of pork butt for those of us concerned about low fat dietary needs to produce a wonderfully flavorful and nitrate free sausage (assuming you are not cold smoking the sausage). I look forward to further exploring the pages and flavors outlined in the sausage making recipe section of this book. The cooking recipe portion of the book for me was unnecessary filler as I already have my own great recipes to use my fresh homemade sausage. I highly recommend this book even if only for the sausage making recipes for anyone who prefers a robustly flavored homemade sausage! The author explains the sausage making process well so anyone can expect excellent results.

Home Sausage Making Techniques Enjoying

`Home Sausage Making' by Susan Mahnke Peery and Charles G. Reavis is a great small book in its third edition since it was originally published in 1981 by the very small publishing house, Storey, which specializes in culinary titles. Reading this book shows up the dangers to a reviewer in reviewing the very first book one encounters on a specialized subject such as home sausage making. Just three days ago, I reviewed `Bruce Aidells' Complete Sausage Book' by meat and sausage experts Aidells and Denis Kelly, published by cookbook behemoth, 10 Speed Press. Naturally, with Aidells' reputation and my liking the previous two books this pair have done, I gave the book a very complementary review.

Now, I read another book on exactly the same subject and I find an even better book that addresses all of the criticisms I had of the Aidells and Kelly book. Specifically, it makes liberal use of illustrations of both equipment and technique, with the added bonus of being very specific about health hazards and the means for avoiding them, by being clear about cooking, aging, and smoking temperatures. Thankfully, there is enough difference between the two books and they are both inexpensive enough to make it worth your while to own both. If you really need to limit yourself to one, the Aidells / Kelly book is better for the armchair sausage buff, who is more interested in things to do with sausage and with the scoop on what is in the sausage he buys at the deli, megamart, or specialty meat store. Peery / Reavis is better for people who are really interested in actually making sausage, based on the much better illustration of sausage making equipment and technique, and fewer recipes, compared to Aidells / Kelly on what to make with sausage.

Peery / Reavis also has a much broader interpretation of what constitutes sausage. In addition to all the obvious preparations, this book includes recipes for making scrapple (2 recipes) and other American favorites. While both books include lots of famous international recipes for fresh and cured sausage, Aidells / Kelly presents these recipes is a more organized fashion which is better suited if you happen to want to make a Spanish or Cajun or oriental sausage.

I compared the recipes for `basic breakfast sausage' in both books and found the ingredients to be virtually identical. The only difference in ingredients is the presence of dried marjoram in Peery / Reavis and their substitution of brown sugar for granulated white sugar. Peery / Reavis' procedure was also more detailed, especially since it was oriented toward making sausage in casings while Aidells / Kelly refers you the general technique on filling casings without repeating the instructions for the specific recipe.

While Aidells / Kelly organizes their recipes by region, Peery / Reavis organizes their recipes by ingredients, giving us chapters on:

Pork Sausages

Beef, Lamb, and Veal Sausages

Combination Sausages

Game Sausages

Poultry Sausages

Seafood Sausages

Vegetarian Sausages

Both books have lots of sidebars on the origins and trivia about sausages. The introduction giving the history seems like one of them cribbed from the other, as they both seem to touch on the same bases, right down to the references to sausage in Homer's `Odyssey'. Aidells / Kelly is just a bit more interesting in this background information; however the charm of Peery / Reavis' background from U.S. bratwurst central in Sheboygan, Wisconsin is not lost in their obvious love of their subject.

As a trivial aside, I must object to Peery / Reavis' comment on Otto von Bismarck's comparison of sausage making and lawmaking, as Bismarck's intent was clearly to illuminate the nature of lawmaking and politics and not to make a culinary comment.

Both books are very good. Get both, but get Peery / Reavis first if you really want to make sausage yourself.

Artisan Bread Five Minutes Revolutionizes

"Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day" contains a wealth of delicious bread recipes and makes artisan home baking seem not only approachable, but easy. All the tricks I learned over months of baking are gathered together in this book. The authors teach you, for instance, that you don't need to make fresh dough every day to have fresh bread every day, that you don't need to proof your yeast, and that you don't always have to knead your dough. These aren't new ideas, but while I had to read many baking books to learn these helpful tips, "Artisan Baking in Five Minutes a Day" condenses them all into one highly accessible text. I will admit that having a solid background of baking experience helped me make the recipes I tried from this book, and that at times I kneaded the dough a bit or proofed my yeast - old habits die hard - but even when I didn't give in to the temptation to knead or proof, the resulting breads were remarkably satisfying. I especially enjoyed the "Tips and Techniques" chapter, which explains moisture content and how to successfully modify doughs. It also tackles problems associated with underbaking or overbaking your loaves, giving you a helpful breakdown of signs to look for and how to improve your baking as a result. Though photos do not accompany the majority of the recipes, a handful of color photos are included in the middle of the book along with how-to photos in the "Master Recipe" section. The 5 minutes a day part stems from the fact that the authors often have you mix a big batch of various kinds of doughs, then give you instructions for making different breads from the initial batch throughout the week. I thought this technique was fairly successful, with the exception of the Raisin Bread, which I felt would have been improved if it were based on a sweet, rather than a buttermilk, dough. But that's a matter of personal preference, as is my wish that the authors hadn't included quite so many "accompaniment" recipes, such as bean dips or soups to eat with certain breads. Yet, overall this book is an excellent addition to any library. I highly recommend the "Foccacia with Onion and Rosemary" and the "Spinach Feta Bread."

This is the most perfect tabletop cooking grill. The temperature is spread VERY evenly like a high grade copper pan on a industrial grade gasoline stove. The pan is stick-free and needs very little cooking oil. I have yet to find any food that stick to the grill. You can remove to the grill and put it into a dishwasher.

I use these to cook everything from eggs, hash browns, beef, soup, sukiyaki, pot stickers, and fried rice. Not only do these cook well, but these cook MUCH better than any of my high grade pots and pans on an electric stove. In fact, I have learned to use these every time I can since I just hate cooking on a stove now.

One of the advantages of cooking on a tabletop is that the food tends to be much hotter and has more sizzle. That's not for everyone especially those who can't handle temperature hot food. But if you like your meat and vegetables fresh off the grill with the sizzle, then these will do the job for you.

The only drawback I find is that these are made for cooking for two. You can cook for more than two but it will obviously take longer.
