Romes 1705 Square Steel Handles

I think this is the best pie iron out there. It is the same model that the sporting goods stores carry. Nice long handles and includes a bump in the handle so that the lock doesn't slide all the way down to the iron and get hot. The handles of mine came a little scratched up but it's for camping so it's going to get beat up anyways. I really like the cast iron construction! Like all square pie irons that I've come across, the bread doesn't seal well on all edges however it never seems to bother me. Some other people are used to the round makers that pinch the bread together and you have to cut off the edges but I think that is just wasteful and it means your pie ends up being smaller. I don't know what people use for seasoning of the cast iron but I find that the "Pam For Grilling" works great. I rarely have any issues with anything sticking in the iron!

  2. These little gadgets are great for camping, or just a cook out at home. The kids love them and the possibilities are endless. Great seller to deal with, fast shipping. Thanks!!

  3. This item is perfect for campfire pies. Make sure you are willing to spend a little time "seasoning" the pie iron, because it will rust if you don't keep it well oiled. Also, I prefer the single pie iron to the double one simply because the double one (in cast iron) is too heavy for me to use. Once the single one is heated up, you can produce the toasty campfire treats pretty quickly. My boys love them . . . and so do I.

  5. Wasn't sure when I bought the pie iron how great it would work. It's made out of a heavier material than most pie irons I've seen which has given it more longevity. I brought it with on my trip out to Yellowstone and it worked wonders! I made pizza pockets in it and they tasted amazing! Great product!

  6. This is a great heavy and durable cooker. Seasoning it is a must, as it isn't nonstick to begin with. After using it several times and re-oiling it, it is better. Much nicer than the cheap ones they sell at Wal-Mart and Target, but not as nonstick. It holds up to the direct heat of the coals of a campfire much better than the other ones too. Overall, I love it and want to buy another one.

  8. As an avid camper for several decades now, I highly recommend these wonderful pie irons. They provide a delightful alternative to dutch oven cooking and grilling. The cast iron brings even cooking and the ability to cook several items quickly, after the initial heating of the iron. They do not lose the heat the way aluminum pie irons do. Nor can you melt them, which we have done with the aluminum. Our children and now our grandchildren enjoy making their own meals. Favorites have ranged from chicken pot pies and pizza pockets, to the ever popular cheese sandwiches and apple pies. We just ordered several new ones because our family has grown. The new ones have maintained the same quality that the aged ones have, a rare thing indeed!
These are CAST IRON, therefore they are heavy! This is a good thing, however, it does make them hard to handle for little ones. I recommend a holder on the side of the fire, or laying on the fire grate.
Overall, these will bring much joy to your campsite. They are a worthwhile investment for any camping family.

  9. I have been using Pie Irons for years. It is nice to finally find one of high quality. The cheap knock-offs are aluminum and often melt in the coals.

Important: read the instructions and melt off the paraffin before using.

For best results get bread larger than the pie iron. That way it crimps the bread together and you have less shirts to wash. :)

Don't buy the double pie iron since it doesn't allow for the crimp. Secondly if you think the single one is heavy wait til you lift the double. ;)

main use: 2 buttered slices of oversized bread filled with cherry pie filling!

One little complaint was that my wood handle had a abnormality on it that makes it pretty painful if you pick it up the wrong way. I may send it back for a replacement but not a reason for not buying.
