Read First Before Buy International Voltage Converter appliances overseas
I didn't buy this converter on Amazon; it was given to me by a friend but it's the exact same Trisonic model that's for sale here. The unit's apparent build quality doesn't inspire a lot of confidence, but amazingly it's still working after almost four years of regular use. The converter gets put to work an average of two or three times a week to power an 80-watt coffee grinder, 350-watt blender, 160-watt mixer and occasionally, a 650-watt sandwich maker. Over the past year or so every time I plug it into the socket I think it may be the last time I'll be able to use the little converter because it's reached the end of its useful life, but no, it just keeps on working.
While writing this review I though to test the unit's output voltage, which I'd never done before. The A/C power supply was 230v and the converter's output tested 79v, not 115v as it should have been. I was somewhat surprised that the voltage would be so low but I guess that's been enough to power the above mentioned kitchen appliances with no noticeable ill effects for the past several years; in fact, the plastic base of our $20 blender's jar has stress cracks already and it's never been powered by anything besides this converter. I'm thinking the converter will outlive the blender. The unit heats up if it's left in the outlet even if it's not powering anything, so after use it should be unplugged right away.
Despite its shortcomings, based on my experience I would highly recommend this voltage converter to power motor driven or heat generating appliances. It's been more reliable than I ever thought a cheap device like this would be.
I am going to Germany for 16 days, and I need to use my hair straightener, curling iron, digital camera battery charger (Canon Powershot), and cell phone charger while I am over there. I bought a wattage converter/adapter for it, but I've heard horror stories about them frying our electronics or not working. Do they work ok, or have you had problems? I bought a Protege brand converter from Wal Mart, if anyone has ever used that specific kind.
