Best Review on Breville BGR400XL 1800 Watt Removable Plate Grill
My husband is the cook in our family, but I'm the fast typist, so I'm writing this for both of us. We've had our Breville BGR400XL Ikon grill for 3 days, and my husband hasn't stopped thinking of new things to try with it. I'd say he's in love. It's a pleasure to use and so far we know it makes beautiful sandwich wraps, lamb, chicken breasts and vegetables (such as onions, peppers and broccoli). He wishes he'd known about this years ago, where he always used grill pans instead. It's good looking too, so we leave it out next to the cooktop. I do the clean-up, and the grilled-on food is easily removable. However the grill ups/downs are square-ish instead of rounded, so to make sure there isn't anything left in the 90 degree angles, I'm going to start soaking the grill plates a few minutes before washing, and I expect that'll make it a breeze. Besides this being a total win product, Breville's customer service is impressive. When researching before purchase, my husband spoke to a woman who actually knew several of their products from personal experience, or at least where she had actually put her hands on the product, not just seen its description and photo in a book. What's also nice - you get a person immediately, not a phone tree and long wait time. Bottom line, we're so glad we found this grill and will be recommending it to our friends who we know also appreciate fine tools.

BalasHapusThis grill is great for fish, meat and panini and is very quick once it is ready - but it takes a long time for the green ready light to go on. It gets very hot and is nice and heavy and the plates are easy to clean. Too hot for children to use.
BalasHapusI bought this grill since a friend loved it, even though some Amazon reviews scared me. I have used it now for a few months and love it.
BalasHapusThe good: it grills steaks, chicken, veggies, and paninis very well and fast. It's great.
The bad: my top plate also kept falling off (I was very upset and wanted to return it). All I did was bend the little hook at the very top that latches the plate in (I bent it upward), and that solved the problem. Now the top plate never falls off.
Overall, this grill is amazing. It saves a lot of time, and the paninis that come out of it are amazing.
I purchased and returned three other grills, before buying this one. The only other one that came close to the performance of the Breville BGR400XL, was the Cuisinart GR-4/Bella Kitchen 4-in-1. (These are the same grill)
BalasHapusThe Cuisinart can't compare to the build quality of the BGR400XL! In addition, the Breville DEFINATLY gets hotter, despite being rated at 50 deg less than the GR-4! The GR-4 barely, left brown grill marks, compared to deep, dark, seared grill marks, from the Breville.
There is a substantial engineering challenge, to overcome, with removable grill plates. The Breville iKon BGR400XL meets that challenge in spades!
This grill heats/cooks, as well as the fixed plate George Foreman grills, but does it with removable plates and a 5" capacity.
If you are limited to a sub $100 budget, get a cheap, fixed plate, grill. If you want to get the same performance, with removable plates, get the Breville iKon!
I just bought this as my first indoor grill hoping to cook some tasty and healthy food quickly in my busy life.
BalasHapusMy sister owns a George Foreman grill and mentioned that to me. She has a non-removable grill so cleaning was a bit tedious. So I wanted one with removable plates to wash them in sink.
From what I read on George Foreman's removable grills, they are not very well built and don't get very hot (see their reviews). Then I found about Cusinart GR-4, their highest end model. While it has many fancy features, I also heard they are cheaply built, the handles are easy to break. Anyway, the last one I found, this Brevile Ikon Grill seems to be perfect for me. The size is not too big, neither too small for one to two people.
I went into Bed Bath and Beyond compared all of them. This one is definitely the best built one. To be honest none of them are what I consider "well built". But this one is much more sturdy than others. I've grilled 1 inch thick steak no problem (I tried 2 inch thick steak and that's not going anywhere, but it's expected I'd say). It can get very hot. Takes about 4-5 min to warm up depending on your setting.
Oh, before I decide to purchase this grill, I called Brevile USA to check if they have replacement plates in case the non-sticking coating gets worn out (they don't list this on their web site). They told me they do sell it and it costs $35 (Cusinart replacement plate sells for $30). These plates should last for a while if you take care of them.
I actually like it requires you to pull the plug to turn it off. It's much safer this way and has not been an inconvenience.
Overall, I'd recommend this grill over others.
I received this for Christmas and have already made several pressed sandwiches, such as a bacon, egg and cheese english muffin sandwich, grilled ham and cheese, and a grilled BLT. The sandwiches are great and I'm looking forward to learning how to do other things with it, such as grilling meat and making pizza. It's not too heavy and locks so that you can store it on its side. The feet tilt so that you can grill and the drippings will drain into a drip tray in the front of the unit. The cord rolls up on the bottom of the unit. It is sturdy and the plates are easy to remove and clean. the grill heats up quickly and the sandwiches come off the grill very hot. Overall a great addition to my kitchen.

BalasHapusI know the title may sound strange but the great reviews set high expectations. The BGR400XL easily exceeded those expectations.
BalasHapusThis grill has performed wonderfully. It has a solid build and a commercial/professional look and feel that I tend to prefer. The plates are easy to remove and replace with a solid "snap". It's a bonus that they are dishwasher safe.
I would compare this grill to a fixed plate model anytime. Perhaps it's the 1800 Watts that drives the heat so efficiently into the plates. Bottom line, this grill is more than hot enough to sear meats and heat sandwiches thoroughly.
Though it comes with a flat plate I have not used or needed it yet. The ribbed plates work perfectly. I've made at least a dozen panini in the short time I've had it. The bread toasts perfectly, the contents of the sandwiches are hot, and the cheese is melted throughout.
One point to make is that I use hearty or artisan breads, e.g. a French Miche from Panera Bread. I haven't tried to use Wonderbread or anything similar so I cannot accurately speak to how well it will work under those circumstances. I imagine it will work fine if one doesn't try to build a Dagwood between two minuscule slices of tender white bread and expect it to be heated throughout without charring the exterior.
In closing, I would not only recommend this grill, I would buy it for family or friends.
This is my first Electric grill and it looks nice and it is high quality grill (got George Forman's grill but returned it before using it as I didn't like its quality). Used it once so far and was very good. I wonder though why it didn't have an on and off switch, you have to remover the power cord from the power source to turn it off!!! Thinking about it, it could be a safety feature. Will update later if anything new as I am planning on using it often.
