Read First Before Buy Spondulix Paul Di Filippo
I bought this book years ago because I read a book of short stories by Di Fillipo and one of those stories in that book was:Strange Trades
Now Strange Trades is a fabulous collection and I went crazy and bought everything he wrote. Well, not all of it was so great and I lost interest and I just got around to reading this.
It's the "life story" of Rory Honeyman and it's quite a tale. It's so well done that I went to live in Hoboken (figuratively, not literally) and the Spondulix are integral to the book. Spondulix are a form of alternative currency. Rory writes an IOU for sandwiches to pay his sandwich maker and this IOU becomes a competitor to the US Dollar. It makes sense, the Spondulix is actually backed by something whereas the US Dollar is backed by absolutely nothing.
Do yourself a favor and track this book down. It's well worth it and I was shocked nobody has ever reviewed it.
