Free Motion Machine Quilting Perfection Troubleshooting

I've quilted by machine almost 20 years, but I still seek more information and more ways of looking at the process. If I learn only one thing, but it is the difference between an okay quilt and a really good one, it's worth the price of the book to me. This book is like that; there'll be something new or something you almost know, but forgot. The pictures are excellent, and it's nice to have confirmed what I have always believed, but which nobody teaches, and there's some of that in there, too. It would give a beginner so much, and I would highly recommend it to them; if you feel like I do and you are an experienced quilter, you might like it too. When people ask you for help, you can always show them (or lend it to them). If you do good work, you'll always be asked for help.

  1. I was very lucky to have attended a class given by Don Lin. I also bought the book at the end of the class. This book is Don. His methods are clearly stated, and he really knows what he is talking about. Displaying his quilts in his book is a good idea. It shows you what you might be able to accomplish after a lot of practice. Having this book is so good for reference. I took notes during the class, but this book has everything. If you tried to machine quilt on your own, as I did, you will feel very frustrated. You just need to practice, practice, practice!! I am getting better at it. Oh...just so you know...his methods are so highly sought after, his class sells out every time.

    He gets my vote!

  2. I have been trying to teach myself free-motion quilting for a couple of years. I know it would be faster and easier and until I can afford a long arm quilter I needed to come up with something... anyway I have looked at many books from the library, book stores, friends etc. and they just did not make sense to me. This book is awesome. Mr. Linn has written it so well (inserting problems, causes, and solutions in just the right places) that it makes sense to me and I am now on my way to free-motion quilting. He stress's practice which even though I knew it required practice in other books I could not figure out how to even do it let alone practice. I love this book and plan to check into other instruction books he has.

  5. Free-Motion Machine Quilting by Don Linn is a wonderful book! Mr. Linn begins by giving you information about threads, tension, needles and a list of tools that he finds helpful. He talks about marking and how to baste your quilt sandwich together, such as using pins. Free-Motion Machine Quilting gives instructions about where to place your hands while quilting. From here, Linn starts a quilter using simple designs and working up to more complicated ones.

While reading this book, I felt an insurgence of hope and the feeling that I could achieve more in my quilting attempts; a knowing that with practice, I could do the complicated patterns. It seems as if Mr. Linn is looking over your shoulder telling you that you are doing a good job, while gently making suggestions and very mildly pointing out the problems, and how you can fix them in the future.

I would recommend this book to all machine quilters, beginners and the more advanced. I wished I could have had this book when I was doing my first attempts of machine quilting. It should encourage everyone who reads this book!
